D.J.'s Hero Awards Luncheon: Featuring Keynote Speaker Dr. Ben Carson

Benjamin S. Carson, Sr., M.D.,
had a childhood dream of becoming a physician. Growing up in a single parent home, it was his mother who challenged her son to strive for excellence.  Young Ben persevered, and today is a full professor of neurosurgery, oncology, plastic surgery and pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

Carson received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2008. Among his career highlights include the first and only successful separation of craniopagus (Siamese) twins joined at the back of the head in 1987.

THE SALVATION ARMY/KETV 7 CAN HELP KIDS BACK TO SCHOOL BACKPACK PROGRAM

The Salvation Army and KETV 7 Can Help Kids are teaming up to collect new school supplies.  Since 1998 more than 120,000 local children have been assisted through this program.  The need continues to grow.  Approximately one-third of local children live in poverty.  Many families continue to face economic hardships that prevent parents from purchasing school supplies for their children.

Every year, The Salvation Army/KETV Seven Can Help Kids Back to School Backpack Program provides thousands of children with backpacks, school supplies and free school health checks at locations across the metro.  The new 2013 premier sponsor is Methodist Health System.  Methodist physicians offer free student health checks on Saturday, August 10 at all distribution sites in Omaha.  New collection partners are local participating McDonald’s and Kaplan University.

The following items are needed:  backpacks, crayons, markers, rulers, glue, erasers, spiral notebooks, two pocket folders, pencils, pens and theme paper.

New school supplies are being collected now through August 6.  They can be dropped off at The Salvation Army Lied Renaissance Center (3612 Cuming Street), any Methodist clinic or hospital location, participating McDonald’s and Kaplan University.  Monetary donations can be made online at www.GiveSalvationArmy.org.  You may also support the Back to School program by texting OMAHA to 80888 and make a $10 donation by phone.  Message and data rates apply.
