D.J.'s Hero Awards Luncheon: Featuring Keynote Speaker Dr. Ben Carson


Benjamin S. Carson, Sr., M.D.,
had a childhood dream of becoming a physician. Growing up in a single parent home, it was his mother who challenged her son to strive for excellence.  Young Ben persevered, and today is a full professor of neurosurgery, oncology, plastic surgery and pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. 

Carson received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2008. Among his career highlights include the first and only successful separation of craniopagus (Siamese) twins joined at the back of the head in 1987.

SALVATION ARMY ACCEPTING CALLS FOR HEAT ASSISTANCE



The Salvation Army, in partnership with Metropolitan Utility District and Black Hills Energy, has offered energy assistance to customers in need for more than 30 years. The fund targets older and/or disabled people and in some cases, those experiencing a situational crisis. 

Last year 3,666 households received assistance in the MUD and BHE services areas.

The Heat Aid Fund (MUD) and Heat Share Fund (Black Hills Energy) operate on a year-around basis. For more information contact The Salvation Army at 402.898.5966.

Monetary donations can be made through monthly billing statements, on-line at givesalvationarmy.org or mailed directly to The Salvation Army, 10755 Burt Street, Omaha NE 68114.

Residents of Council Bluffs, Iowa may contact the local Salvation Army for heat assistance by calling 712-328-2088. 

Those who qualify for assistance must have received a heating service shut off notice; be of age 60 or older, or suffer from a medical disability.  The Salvation Army will also take the applicants' payment history into consideration.
