D.J.'s Hero Awards Luncheon: Featuring Keynote Speaker Dr. Ben Carson

Benjamin S. Carson, Sr., M.D.,
had a childhood dream of becoming a physician. Growing up in a single parent home, it was his mother who challenged her son to strive for excellence.  Young Ben persevered, and today is a full professor of neurosurgery, oncology, plastic surgery and pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

Carson received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2008. Among his career highlights include the first and only successful separation of craniopagus (Siamese) twins joined at the back of the head in 1987.

RARE CHINESE GOLD COIN FOUND IN A SALVATION ARMY RED KETTLE IN OMAHA

A 10 Franc Gold Rooster 1911 gold coin was found in a Salvation Army Red Kettle over the weekend at Mangelsen’s in southwest Omaha.  The .0933 oz gold coin is worth an estimated $135.00 at this time.

“The generosity of the citizens of Omaha never cease to amaze me.  I would like to think that all of our donors have hearts of gold, but this donation proves it,” said Major Todd Thielke, Senior Kroc Officer with The Salvation Army Kroc Center.

The Tree of Lights $3million campaign began November 8th.  As of November 27, more than $934,000 has been donated to the campaign.  The Red Kettle drive runs through December 24th.   More volunteer bell ringers are needed now through Christmas Eve.  Register online at ringomaha.org or call 402.898.6000.

In addition to giving time as a volunteer, there are several ways to give to The Salvation Army.  Mail donations to The Salvation Army, 10755 Burt Street, Omaha NE 68114 or visit GiveSalvationArmy.org to donate online.  Donors can create a personal, team or company online red kettle at onlineredkettle.org.
